What to Look for When Choosing a CNC Retrofitting Partner in India

By Manjunath S Tuppad, Industrial Automation Expert |

MST Automation's direct answer: A reliable CNC retrofitting partner must have in-house electrical panel building capabilities, proven expertise in writing custom PLC ladder logic, and the mechanical know-how to align servo motors and tune ball screws. Never hire a partner who only sub-contracts these critical elements.

Don't Fall for the "Hardware Only" Integrator

Many self-proclaimed "system integrators" only buy the Fanuc or Siemens hardware from a distributor and attempt to slap it onto your machine. The true skill in retrofitting is not hanging the screen on the pendant; it lies entirely in the software interfacing and panel wiring.

1. Ask to See Their PLCs

Every Automatic Tool Changer (ATC), coolant pump, and hydraulic clamp requires thousands of lines of custom PLC logic to function safely. If the integrator cannot explain their method for writing fail-safe PLC loops, they will likely crash your machine during commissioning.

2. Evaluate Their Panel Shop

Do they build professional, standardized panels? Open a cabinet they have built previously. If the wires resemble a bird's nest without proper labeling, ferrules, or segregated wire ducts for high/low voltage, walk away. A sloppy electrical panel guarantees years of phantom machine alarms.

3. Servo Tuning Expertise

Once the machine turns on, it will not cut an accurate circle. The motors must be mathematically tuned (adjusting proportional and integral gains) using specialized oscilloscope software to match the mass of your machine's cast iron. Only highly trained engineers can perform perfect servo tuning to eliminate "quadrant glitches" on circular sweeps.
